Como sucede con tantas otras tradiciones, San Valentín también tiene su historia y su razón de ser. Tendríamos que remontarnos a la antigua roma para conocer su leyenda. Allí, según cuentan, un sacerdote de renombre llamado Valentín casó en secreto y durante años a cientos de parejas jóvenes. Durante esa época los matrimonios estaban prohibidos y saltarse la ley implicaba la sentencia de muerte.

Un día el sacerdote fue descubierto y condenado a morir por traición. Estando en la cárcel, uno de los guardianes que confiaba en los milagros de la iglesia le suplicó que curara a su hija de la ceguera que padecía desde hacía años. Valentín, como buen sacerdote que era, lo intentó y para sorpresa del guardián, ¡consiguió curarla! Aun así Valentín no pudo zafarse de su condena y murió finalmente ejecutado el 14 de febrero. El guardián, en agradecimiento por el milagro que había obrado con su hija plantó un almendro en su honor, del que brotaron las más preciosas flores rosas de todo el imperio. Valentín fue considerado en adelante un santo defensor del amor, San Valentín, y el 14 de febrero el día marcado en el calendario para celebrar el amor.
